The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a great opportunity for homeowners and small businesses in the UK to reduce the upfront cost of installing eco-friendly heating systems. This government initiative offers £7,500 grants for air source and ground source heat pumps, making it easier to switch to low-carbon options. There’s also a £5,000 grant available for biomass boilers.

To take advantage of the scheme, all you need to do is work with an MCS-certified installer. They’ll apply for the grant on your behalf, so the savings are applied directly to your installation costs. The scheme is open to homeowners and small property owners in England and Wales and has been extended to run until 2028.

This initiative is designed to help you reduce your energy bills and your carbon footprint, making your home more sustainable in the long run.

Heat Pump Case Studies - Manchester

We removed a gas combination boiler and replaced with a 7 KW Vaillant aroTHERM Plus heat pump, a 200-litre cylinder and Vaillant sensoCOMFORT weather compensation controls.

We did not have to replace any existing radiators as our calculation showed that most rooms could be heated with a 45c flow temperature with the existing radiators.

The system is designed to operate at 45c when it is -2c outside, to give a 21c temperature in living rooms and 18c in bedrooms. We have been able to reduce this to 40c whilst still keeping the house comfortably warm. As the system is weather compensated, the flow temperature rarely gets to this temperature.

Energy efficiency

We checked the operation of the system after 6 weeks of operation (in January and February) and had an efficiency of 360% at this time. We expect this to increase over the year to show a greater efficiency in a 12 month window.

The system has a lower operating cost than a gas boiler at its current efficiency.
